One weekend in the spring of 1973, Sumter was asked by a friend to help paint some windows on his house. A neighbor stopped by and asked if he’d be interested in doing some painting around his house as well. Sumter always dreamed of owning his own business. Based on that small spark of opportunity, and after some research into the market, he made the leap and left his growing career as a successful stock broker to start W. Sumter Cox Painting Contractors, Inc.
In 2021, Sumter Jr. made the decision to return to the family business and carry on the legacy and reputation his father has built over the years. A former marketing executive, Sumter Jr. brings more than 25 years as a branding, communications and customer experience expert to the team, along with the lessons from those memorable hot summers and the same core values of service and a job well done.
